-Releases 2017 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT-“Transforming Liberia together”
Buchanan – ArcelorMittal Liberia announced the publication of its 2017 Sustainability Report today highlighting its accomplishments and commitment to the country and the people of Liberia in sustainable development, a news release from the company said on Friday.
The report is based on the 10 sustainable development outcomes which represent the high standards we hold ourselves to in maintaining our license to operate, according to the release issued on March 29, 2019.
To manage the successful implementation of the outcomes, the company established the Liberia Sustainable Development Committee (SDC) and the Sustainability Steering Group (SSG).
Despite challenges the company has faced, ArcelorMittal Liberia has made significant progress on our commitments to the country and the people of Liberia and we continue to contribute to health and safety, employment, education and training, the environment and community development.
The day-to-day health and safety of our employees continues to be our first priority and we are very proud of our achievements in this area – we have been fatality-free for three years and recorded zero lost-time injuries in 2017.
Education and ensuring a workforce capable of sustaining gains and building on it successes also contributed to its success. In 2017, the company opened its state of the art Vocational Training Center in Yekepa, Nimba County.
The VTC has 47 of some of the brightest youth in Liberia currently enrolled in three programs including; diesel mechanics, electricians and mechanical fitters. The school is building on its capacity and hopes to have 150 students in three-year programs that will include boiler making and welding in the years to come. These students are ensured opportunities throughout ArcelorMittal and the Liberian business sector.
The report reflects on other areas including how much investment the company has made in Liberia since 2005 and other priorities important to external stakeholders such as supporting affected communities in its concession, bio-diversity and clean air and water, decreasing carbon footprint, and corporate and social governance.
We remain a committed and responsible operator and employer. We hope you enjoy learning more about our business, our aims and the work we have been doing to ensure that ArcelorMittal Liberia is a business that not only endures, but helps Liberia and its people to fulfil their potential.
