As the crisis in the Collaborating Political Parties deepens, withdrawal of the former governing Unity Party from the opposition CPP on Wednesday did not really come as a surprise to many.
Former Liberian Vice President Joseph Boakai announced the UP’s withdrawal from the four-party collaboration weeks after his executive committee had called for this action.
And this comes during Boakai’s current reign as chairman of the CPP.
Originally, the CPP comprised four political parties including the Unity Party, the All Liberian Party, the Alternative National Congress and the Liberty Party. ALP was the first to announced its withdrawal from the CPP.
Some time ago, the All Liberian Party of Benoni Urey withdrew following an allegation against the Alternative National Congress of Alexander Cummings as the result in wrangling.
Addressing a press conference, the standard bearer of the Unity Party, Joseph Boakai, disclosed that the national executive committee of the UP has resolved that they withdraw for the CPP.
According to him, political differences among political coalitions such as the CPP are in most cases, resolved through negotiations.
Ambassador Boakai explained that all efforts to resolve the difference in the CPP and the four political parties have resolved to go their own way.
“Based on this back ground,” he went on, “the national executive committee of the Unity Party has finally resolved to withdraw from the Collaborating Political Parties to save the party and Liberia.”
Commenting on his leadership of the since he assumed the chairmanship, the Unity Party standard bearer pointed out that several attempts to resolve the crisis in the CPP were missed.
He explained that the Unity Party is currently holding talks with like -minded political parties purposely to form a more formidable force to ensure that Ambassador George Weah remains a one-term president.
So far, only the ANC and the Musa Bility’s faction of the Liberty Party is in the CPP because the ALP, the UP and the Senator Nyoblee Karngar-Lawrence’s faction of the Liberty Party have all expressed their desires of quitting the CPP.
From all indication, the CPP has finally crumbled as things have fallen apart and they have resolve to go their own ways as evident by the statement of Ambassador Boakai.
The UP standard bearer’s press conference was graced by Benoni Urey and Senator Lawrence as an indication because strongly supporting Ambassador Boakai’s position on the CPP
The leadership of the CPP on one hand is in legal battle between Benoni Urey’s ALP and the ANC of Alexander Cummings and; on the other, the Liberty Party are court.
Observers are of the opinions that the withdrawal of the Unity Party has finally send in the nail of the coffin of the CPP and dashing the hope of many Liberians who view as an alternative to defeat the CDC led by President George Weah in the 2023 presidential and general elections.
