The Acting Chairman of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) has called on officials to cooperate with the CDC–led government in the implementation of the National Human Rights Action Plan of Liberia.
Reverend Bartholomew Colley, who did not elaborate on details of the plan, said the national human rights action plan has undergone the universal periodic review and has met international standard.
Colley made the call when he delivered the at the opening of a one-day high level seminar for heads of ministries, agencies of government and civil society organizations on implementing the National Human Rights Action Plan in Monrovia on Wednesday.
He added that 13 countries out of the 15 states of the West African regional organization, ECOWAS have developed their own national human rights action plans.
The Liberian human rights commission official thanked the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) for the support in drafting the national human rights action plans and expressed the hope that other international partners will assist in the launching of the plan.
The seminar, which was held under the theme: “Support to the Liberian Government Through the National Human Rights Action Plan,” was graced by the representatives from UNMIL, Ministries of National Defense, Justice , Gender among others.
The national human rights action plan is a national human rights plan aimed at administering the affairs of a given state based on internationally accepted human rights standards.
Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission is yet to respond to mounting calls by the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC), the New York-based Human Rights Watch and others for the full implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) recommendations.
Among other things, the TRC called for the prosecution of those who bear the greatest responsibilities for the brutal 14 years civil war in Liberia that led to the slaughter of some 250,000 people.
