Corruption worsening in Liberia, as citizens demand transparency- new study shows

-Liberia ranks as one of worst performing countries globally

Liberia is among the worst performers in West Africa and the world in the fight against corruption, according the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) says on Tuesday (January 29, 2019).

CENTAL is an affiliate of the global anti-corruption watchdog group, Transparency International (TI).

“Globally,     Liberia          ranks 120/180     with   a          CPI     score of        32.      In fact,            Liberia’s       CPI     score has     declined       from  41       in        2012 to 32 in2018            correspondingly.  Compared   to        other countries, globally, Liberia       is            among          the      biggest          decliners      since  2012, dropping    by       9            points           from  41       to        32,”    the report says.

The    Corruption Perception  Index (CPI)  was    established in  1995 and is used  to  measure   perceptions   of  corruption  in  the public sector and in different countries around the world.

In West Africa, countries like Senegal and Ghana have outperformed Liberia as this country continues to drift in ranking, with citizens demanding transparency.

According to the report, Liberia’s      Corruption Perception Index  score has declined  from  41 in  2012 to 32  in 2018 correspondingly.

Meanwhile, CENTAL has expressed serious concern about Liberia’s underperformance, “especially its position as one of the worst decliners.”

The transparency watchdog group put the blame at the feet of the CDC government, citing its “inability  to address entrenched culture of impunity and  enforce  existing anti-corruption  laws   and    policies.

CENTAL also mentions “limited  or  no  effort to        comprehensively audit  the  past    administration      and    prosecute    allegedly      corrupt officials;” among other things.
