EU observers call for transparency in on-going tallying of polls results

(Last Updated On: )

The European Union election observation mission in Liberia is calling for “the ongoing tallying of election results to be done in a transparent manner.”

The EU observers’ call is made Thursday in its latest report on the October 10 presidential and Representatives election, which the EU said was held in a peaceful manner.

“The elections were inclusive and adequately conducted thanks to the positive role of the electoral administration and of political parties,” the EU observers say.

As the collation and announcements of results continue, the report wants candidates and parties should commit to “use the existing legal mechanisms in the case of any electoral grievances.”

In their report read by the Chief Observer, Maria Arena, the EU observer say they have closely followed the process that marks a new chapter in the democratic history of the country.

They thanked all Liberian citizens who have demonstrated a strong commitment through their participation in this democratic process.

Domestic observer, who are deployed across the country, were  also commended for contributing “positively to the electoral process.”

The EU says it is a partner of Liberia and is determined to continue supporting the strengthening of democracy and good governance in this West African country.

EU observers deployed to Liberia will remain in the country until the end of the electoral process, Spokesperson Maria Arena says.

The opposition Liberty Party (LP) of Charles Brumskine has raised allegations of fraud and irregularities in the October 10 polls and earlier called on the National Elections Commission (NEC) to put a hold on releasing any results from the just-ended elections.

LP has threatened to take their case to the Supreme Court of Liberia.
