The European Union (EU) says “it’s important that a full, complete and transparent investigation is carried out and finished as soon as possible” into allegations that nearly US$16 billion Liberian dollars which recently went missing, describing the saga as “serious”.
But a press statement from the EU mission in Monrovia on Tuesday clarified that the EU is not funding any audit into the alleged scandal.
“On 24th September 2018, the EU Delegation to Liberia, together with other diplomatic missions, received a statement from a number of Liberian Civil Society organizations expressing their position with regard to previous reports of missing money in Liberia.
The EU acknowledges the peaceful manner in which the protesters exercised their right to assembly and the enabling environment created by the Government.
To date, information on this issue remains unclear.
The allegations are serious, and it’s important that a full, complete and transparent investigation is carried out and finished as soon as possible. The EU welcomes the investigation recently launched by the Liberian authorities into the issue.
So far the EU has not provided any kind of technical or financial assistance to any audit or investigation on this issue, as hinted by some media.
The EU reaffirms its commitment in strengthening good governance, accountability and transparency in Liberia,” according to the EU statement.
Meanwhile, the European Union says it “remains accessible and open to share information on our work in Liberia.”
