A leading campaign group for advocate for ethical and social justice, the Faith and Justice Network has called on members of the Liberian Legislature to reject the recent bill seeking to legalize abortion in the country.

Recently, the Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Health, Joseph Sawonbe, disclosed that the national legislature is still deliberating o a bill seeking to legalize abortion in Liberia.

Addressing a press conference in Monrovia recently, the Network’s Executive Director, the Reverend Doctor, Tolbert Jallah, said the network rejects the bill submitted by some lawmakers because this ill-conceived move undermines the values of life, compassion and the community that the nation holds so dearly.

He expressed concern about the behaviors of some legislators pushing for the bill, touting it as a step towards progress.

“Progress should never come at the cost of forsaking our core values of compassion, empathy and respect for life,“ Rev. Jallah stated.

According to him, it is disappointing to witness some lawmakers championing the bill under the pretense of respect of progress and modernity.

“Liberians must remember that progress should be grounded in the respect for human rights rather than being swayed by external pressures or misguided ideologies,” he said; adding: “ the proposed legislation fails to consider the profound ethical implications of ending innocent lives and individuals toll that such a decision would have in countless individuals and families.”

“Abortion is a deep sensitive and complex issue, touching on matters of morality, ethics and individual the emotional and psychological toil that such a decision would have on countless individuals and families. We emphatically reject any attempt to undermine the sanctity of life and the principle that define our nation’s character,” said the Faith and Justice Network boss.

Reverend Dr.  Jallah called on Liberians, who value life, compassion and justice to stand united against the bill because the nation strength lies shared commitment to uphold the values that  the nation.

The Faith and Justice Network Executive Director also called on Liberians and all foreign residents who share the organization’s commitment to preserving the sanctity of  life and protecting the vulnerable to rally against this bill.

“It is our collective duty to uphold the value that makes Liberia a beacon of hope and compassion in the world.”

According to him, through open dialogue, understanding and unity, Liberians can find common ground that respects life while addressing the challenges the nation faces.

Reverend Doctor Jallah maintained that the network will continue to advocate for the protection of life and the empowerment of vulnerable people.

“Let’s us foster a culture of dialogue, understanding and empathy, seeking solutions that uphold the well-being of all citizens of the society.”

Rev. Jallah concluded by saying:

“We stand ready to engage in constructive discussions with lawmakers, religious leaders and civil society organizations to find common ground and work towards a more comprehensive and just Liberia.”
