The mortality Rate of
Cancer patients is very high in Africa, with 80% being diagnosed at the very
late stage, the Chief Executive Office of Merck foundation Dr. Rasha Kelej has
disclosed.
Dr.Kelej said on World Cancer day-February 4, 2020- that with
this high rate of cancer mortality in Africa, there are limited number of
Oncologists to treat people with cancer.
The CEO of Merck foundation added that the foundation is
extremely making history by training 80 Oncologists from twenty six countries
across Africa which those African presidents have highly appreciate.
Merck foundation through it cancer access program has been
building Cancer Care capacity to increase limited number of Oncologists across the
continent.
A release to mark World Cancer day said, Merck Foundation is
committed to lead Africa to a better culture through shipping the landscape of
Cancer Care in the continent.
And it is also focusing
on improving access to Cancer Care solutions by developing a multidisciplinary
oncologist are train in each country like medical surgery, pediatric, Gynane,
radiation oncologist, radiation technician, nursing and pathologist among
others as an integrated team approach can lead to better outcome.
“I am very particularly very happy to share that Merck
foundation has trained first ever oncologists in Gambia, Central African
Reblic, Liberia, Guinea, Burundi, Chad, Sierra Leone and they are making more
then history in those countries,” the Merck Foundation CEO said.
