Hospital Nurse Sent To Court For Allegedly Beating Child To Death

SANNIQUELLIE, Liberia – Police in the north-eastern Nimba County has arrested, investigated, charged and sent to court a nurse of the United Methodist hospital in Ganta for allegedly beating a 13-year-old girl to death.

The Nurse, Effice K. Sonkarlay, age 44 works for the Ganta United Methodist Hospital and the suspect is due to be tried by the Sanniquellie Magisterial court.

According to the police charge sheet, the incident occurred on February 5, 2022 in Ganta City around the old public market community.

The suspect was apprehended by the Liberia National Police in Ganta on the day of the incident and turned over to the Sanniquellie detachment for investigation.

Following the investigation, suspect Effice K. Sonkarlay was charged with the crimes of murder in violation of chapter 14, subsection 14.1 of the new penal law of the Republic of Liberia and sent to the Sanniquellie Central prison on February 9, 2022 for onward prosecution.

Explaining further, suspect Effice narrated that she was informed Sunday evening by her daughter that the 13-year-old victim who was living with her allegedly store her Samsung mobile phone, a situation that caused her to beat on little Ma Yar Zeambo with a belt to death.

The suspect told police investigators that she didn’t plan to beat her sister’s daughter to death, and pleaded with the Liberia National police to pardon her adding that it was the work of the devil.

Victim Ma Yar Zeambo was a nine 9th grade student of the Sucess Foundation located along Guinea road community in Ganta City.

Meanwhile, the defendant is currently behind bar awaiting court trial.
