Police in Liberia’s southeastern Grand Kru County Liberia have arrested a traditional hunter who allegedly shot and killed a 40-year-old man.
The victim, identified as Williams Kun Koffa of Wedabo Jlatun, is an employee of Golden Veroleum oil palm company in Liberia.
According to Police Chief Inspector of the Crime Services Detachment in the area, Eric Tharwan Joboe, the Liberia National Police are investigating circumstances Surrounding the fatal Shooting.
The Police Chief Inspector of the Crime Services Detachment Eric Tharwan Joboe, the incident occurred last Saturday, March 26, 2022 at about 6Am GMT near a town called Big Suehn, which is several kilometers away from the Grand Kru County’s capital, Barclayville.
Police CSD office narrated that the forty years old victim William Kun Koffa had gone to hunt in a hereby bush while the hunter identify as Sunney Mogar age 40, was also on a hunting expedition around the same area where victim William Kun Koffa was hunting.
The Police who responded to the crime scene said, victim William Kun Koffa died as the result of a gunshot wound, after a fifteen-member Coroner jury was setup for cross-examination.
Suspect Sunney Mogar, who is a resident of the Big Suehn Community of Grand Kru County, was arrested, investigated and is behind bars, pending court trial.
The Police said victim William Kun Koffa’s body has since been turned over to family members for burial.
Suspect Mogar says killing was unintentional
Meanwhile, suspect Sunney Mogar told police investigators on Monday, March 28, 2022 at the Grand Kru Police headquarters, that he had gone into the bush alone with his small brother with a flashlight to hunt over an hour plus when he saw light from a distance, but he inadvertently took victim William Kun Koffa for an animal. He then instantly discharged his single barrel gun, leaving the victim to death.
According to suspect Sunney Mogar, he reported himself to the community and the Police immediately after he realized the incident that victim William Kun Koffa was mistakenly gunned down. And he said he shot in the said direction without verifying what was actually shaking the bush.
Mr. Mogar also said after releasing the single barrel rounds, he later realized that he has shot a human being and not a bush-goat as he expected.
Suspect Mogar also added that he cried out for help and was immediately assisted by some community members and the police to rush the man to the town but he died along the way, due to the severity of the wounds he sustained.
He has therefore pleaded for with the legal authorities and the victim’s family members for forgiveness.
