In Just Four Days: 10 Deaths From COVID-19, 44 New Infections In Liberia

As Confirmed Cases Goes Above 1,000, With Other Areas In The Health System Being Affected

The number of people infected by the Coronavirus pandemic in Liberia reached 1, 100 over the weekend, with 4 deaths and 12 new confirmed cases announced by the National Public Health Institute on July 11, 2020.

In just four days, from July 7-11, 2020, Liberia recorded ten new deaths, with 44 new infections, but recorded 28 new recoveries.

Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Francis Kateh told the Public Trust Media Group’s new radio magazine show, WEEKEND FILE aired on Capital FM 89.7, that with the lack of adherence to the health protocol shown by many Liberia, the number of infections would continue to rise.

Dr. Kateh urged the public not to continue to be in a state of denial and realize that COVID-19 is real.

“COVID-19 is real and everyone needs to do self-preservation. And self-preservation means wearing your masks. You have to be open to Health care workers. Please do not go from one health center to another to expose other people,” Dr. Kateh advised.

At the same time, the Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia has given the impact of the Coronavirus on the health in the country.

Dr. Mosoka Fallah has he said a lot people have adopted the habit of boycotting hospital whenever they are sick simply because of the fear of detecting the symptoms in them and undergoing quarantine.

He was speaking recently when he served as one of the panelists on a zoom conference organized by the London School of Economics and Political Science, Dr. Fallah explained that above five treatment for malaria has dropped by 35 percent and 35 percent of the children have not been immunized.

According to him, there has been a decrease in the cases of people diabetic and ten percent of people tested and proven to be HIV positive are not reporting for their drugs.

The NPHIL Director General noted that the health work force is a challenge because health work who are not directly in the front line of the combat against corona virus are demanding health rick benefits, because they themselves are exposed to danger.

He added that government is only paying health hazard to to those directly in the front of the fight against corona virus not those assigned in the regular health centers.

Dr. Fallah pointed out that government has spent more than three million United States Dollars in combating corona virus and the World Bank has also contributed 15 million United States dollars to the fight.
