In Lofa County, Liberia: Rape Suspect Dies In Police Cell

VOINJAMA, Liberia-Police in the northwestern district of Zorzor Lofa County are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 23-year-old rape suspect, who was earlier today, Wednesday January 13, 2021, found hanging on from a rope tied to his neck suspended from the ceiling of his cell at the Zorzor Police Station.

He was arrested three days ago (January 10, 2021) in Kiliwu, Zorzor District after reportedly raping a 14 year old minor who had gone on fishing expedition near a gold mine in this area situated 297 kilometers from Monrovia.

According to Lofa County Attorney Cllr. Luther J. Sumo, the deceased whose name is not mentioned, is said to have sexually assaulted and raped the survivor who later ran naked to town in tears and reported her unfortunate situation.

A citizens’ arrest was consequently effected before the accused rapist was turned over to police in whose custody he later died.

Though most people are hinting at a possible suicide, doubts surround how the deceased could have possibly laid hands on the rope found fastened to his neck while still in police confinement.
