In US: Thousands Of Liberian Refugees Still In Limbo, As COVID-19 Worsens

Amid the worsening COVID-19 pandemic, the Boston-based human rights organization, Universal Human Rights International (UHRI) has relaunched its appeal to save thousands of Liberian refugees, who have been languishing in the United States since 2020.

UHRI, which has for many years been seeking the interest of Africans in the United States, says most of these Liberian refugees are without humanitarian assistance and are being denied work permits and food, as conditions created by the pandemic deteriorate by the day.

According to latest COVID-19 Alert, the US has so far recorded 19.2 million Coronavirus cases, with some 333,000 deaths.

The head of the Boston-based rights group, Rev. Torli Krua said in his latest Tweet that even some American clerics have “refused to advocate for thousands of Liberian Refugees but send food worldwide & advocates for Trump.

Last month (November 2020), Rev. Krua sounded a warning that hundreds of Liberians were at risk, in the wake of a new spike in the Coronavirus pandemic.

In a phone interview with www.newspublictrust.com , the UHRI boss said that the plight of Liberian refugees in the US was worrisome, because instead of one or two states becoming Coronavirus hotspots, almost the entire US was considered COVID-19 hotspot.

Rev. Krua said many of the Liberians in question are stranded and not able to earn a living, because their passports have expired.

“They neither have the money or capacity to do anything for themselves. This is a matter of life and death,” the US-based human rights advocate asserted.
