Health workers say more patients in the Monrovia area are now needing oxygen because of experiencing serious breathing difficulties, as the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 increases.
What health authorities described as a third wave is said to be posing serious challenge to the health system, with the National Public Health Institute (NPHIL) reporting one new death, taking the total number of deaths to 95, with Liberian officials confirming in the local media that a new Covid variant has entered this West African country.
In a period of one week, seven deaths have been reported. From 88 deaths, the number of deaths rose to 85 between June 8-15, 2021, according to the NPHIL COVID-19 Update.
In just 24 hours–from June 14-15, 2021, 76 new confirmed cases of the virus has been reported in the NPHIL COVID-19 update published on its website. As at Tuesday, June 15, Liberia had a total of 529 confirmed cases of the deadly virus.
At the same time, there is one new recovery reported on Tuesday.
So far, the Liberian government is yet to announced new heightened measures to curb the new rising wave of the Coronavirus. But there is growing speculation that given the latest upsurge in the pandemic, the Executive Mansion and health authorities are poised to impose some new measures any time soon. One of them is highly speculated to be possible quarantine of COVID-19 hotspots or the entire capital, Monrovia.
