The Liberia Revenue Authority, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, has officially launched Liberia’s first nationwide Value Added Tax Awareness Campaign, said a press release from the LRA posted on its website today, Friday, February 20, 2026.
The campaign was formally launched by Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, who underscored the importance of strengthening domestic resource mobilization at a time when external development assistance is declining.
He emphasized that revenue collection is what transforms the national budget from a document into tangible investments in infrastructure, energy, healthcare, and education.
In his special remarks, Commissioner General James Dorbor Jallah described the VAT transition, effective January 1, 2027, as a significant milestone in Liberia’s fiscal modernization. VAT, currently used in over 170 countries, will replace the existing GST system and is expected to enhance transparency, broaden the tax base, reduce cascading taxation, and improve compliance efficiency.
The nationwide awareness initiative will include stakeholder consultations, business engagement, training programs, and public education to ensure preparedness across sectors.
This reform reflects Liberia’s commitment to fiscal resilience, improved governance, and sustainable domestic resource mobilization.
We look forward to continued partnership with businesses, practitioners, and development partners to ensure a smooth and successful transition.
