BUCHANA, Liberia- Police in Grand Bassa County have arrested a 40-year-old local farmer identified as George Junior Nagbo for allegedly beating his wife, Sarah Zeh who died after being severely beaten.

The incident happened on Monday last week (July 18, 2022) in William Potter Town, electoral district # 2 in this county.

The man is currently in detention at the Police headquarters on the Fairground in Buchanan. He blamed the situation on witchcraft and added that the medicine they allegedly wanted to kill him with is what they used to kill his wife, putting him in trouble though he did not mention those who want to kill him.

The woman, who was also 40 years old and mother of three children, was pronounced dead by doctors on Wednesday morning, July 27, 2022 at the Liberian Government Hospital in Buchanan.

According to suspect Nagbo, a misunderstanding ensued between them on Monday, July 18, 2022, after he left the civil compound in the district and got back home at 6:30 pm.

The suspect said when he got home, he met the cutlass he normally used to go on the farm-outside and asked the victim what his cutlass was doing there. He said that angered him, so he ordered his son to take his cutlass in the house.

Mr. Nago explained that it was from his farming activities that they were able to get money to survive and he was also able to buy a TVS motorbike that is operating commercially.  From that, he was even able to save money to buy another motorcycle and do other businesses.

As a result of intense exchanges, the suspect claimed that victim got irritated and she started accusing him of having extra marital affairs with a woman who he didn’t mention on the civil compound.

The suspect noted that the argument intensified between them after he accused her of loving a man the same way he too has a girlfriend. As the commotion intensified, Sarah Zeh allegedly slapped him in his face and he retaliated.

Defendant Nagbo stated that the deceased later held his T-shirt while trying to escape, hauling him back. And while fighting to release himself, he said that he stepped on her stomach, thus leaving his wife unconscious, her body complexion changed and her eyes turned yellow.

Due to her health condition, he said he took her to a man only identified as Jerry for medical treatment but he was not satisfied and later rushed her to the Liberian Government Hospital in Buchanan, where she underwent treatment for several days.

He told police during the investigation that from the 18 of July to the 27, his wife did not recover until she was pronounced dead by doctors at the hospital. They spent over 18 years in their relationship, he added.

When contacted, the commander of the Crimes Service Division of the Liberia National Police in Grand Bassa County, James Yekeku confirmed the incident and said the Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the matter.

Commander Yekeku said the Police are working with relevant health authorities to obtain the medical report to determine the cause of her death. He said after their investigation, they will give detailed information to the media but for now, they can’t speak further because investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, suspect Nagbo is appealing to the family of the deceased to forgive him and help seek his release from police detention.
