(Last Updated On: )

Monrovia – The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has revealed that that there is an outbreak of the Moneypox virus (Mpox) in this West African country, with five persons being affected.

“Since the beginning of this year 2024, Liberia has accounted for 5 confirmed cases in 3 counties. In recent times, new cases have been confirmed in neighbouring countries like Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire in the region,” NPHIL revealed in a press release issued in Monrovia on Thursday, August 14, 2024.

Liberia has 15 counties, but NHPHIL has not named the three counties affected by this disease, which the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox as an international public health emergency.

The WHO says Mpox (monkeypox) presents with fever, an extensive characteristic rash and usually swollen lymph nodes.

NHIL said  it has been informed of an outbreak of the Monkeypox virus (Mpox) in several countries of the WHO African Region, mainly in Central and West Africa.

This Mpox outbreak has been determined by the WHO to be a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR).
