NaFAA Launches Coastal Clean-Up Campaign, Ahead of World Fisheries Day

(Last Updated On: )

Monrovia, Liberia — The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) has launched a major coastal clean-up campaign across the West Point and Banjor beaches as part of its renewed commitment to maintaining environmental sanitation in Liberia’s nine coastal communities.

According to a press release from NaFAA, the campaign was officially launched on Tuesday with the participation of community members, fisheries stakeholders, and international partners.

Speaking at the event, NaFAA’s Acting Director General, J. Cyrus Saygbe Sr., emphasized that the initiative forms part of a broader national effort to restore and sustain a healthy coastal environment.

Mr. Saygbe noted that keeping Liberia’s beaches clean requires collective action and highlighted ongoing engagements with fisheries partners to strengthen the initiative. “This requires a joint effort to keep all our beaches clean,” he stated.

NaFAA is calling on residents, including fishmongers, fishermen, and local business owners, to fully participate in maintaining cleanliness along the coastline to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all.

Several key fisheries partners, including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Conservation International (CI), attended the ceremony and pledged their continued support to promote clean and sustainable fisheries environments in Liberia.

The Liberia Artisanal Fishermen Association (LAFA) is also committed to working with the Government of Liberia through NaFAA to help ensure that all fishing communities remain clean and well-managed.

The coastal clean-up campaign is one of several activities leading up to World Fisheries Day. This international observance highlights the importance of healthy ocean ecosystems and the sustainable management of fisheries resources.
