BUCHANAN, Grand Bassa County, Liberia – A major medical outreach in Grand Bassa County is giving a new lease on life to more than 80 residents in need of surgery, at no cost to the patients.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Grand Bassa County Health Team under the leadership of Dr. Jude Wesseh, began Friday, August 15, and will run through Sunday, August 17, at the Liberia Government Hospital compound in Buchanan.
The Nyonblee Cares Foundation, founded and sponsored by Grand Bassa County Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, provided critical materials and resources to ensure the program’s success. The surgeries target conditions such as hydrocele, hernia, undescended testes, cysts, lipoma, and myoma.
Family members of beneficiaries, including Barbaralyn Johnny and Mardea Hanery, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the life-changing assistance. “This means so much to our families. We are grateful,” said Hanery.
The Medical Officer of the Liberia Government Hospital, Dr. Yolah Camanor, assured reporters that the hospital will provide timely updates on the progress of the outreach. She led members of the media on a tour of the post-surgery ward, where two children under the age of five had already survived successful surgical procedures.
In a related development, the hospital’s cafeteria, shut down for a prolonged period, is expected to reopen soon. Senator Karnga-Lawrence disclosed that the Ministry of Finance is prepared to disburse 50 percent of the cafeteria’s allotment in the national budget, at least USD 25,000, through the ministry of health to address the situation.
The partnership between the Grand Bassa County Health Team and the Nyonblee Cares Foundation is being hailed as a model for collaborative community healthcare, bringing hope and improved health outcomes to dozens of households across the county.
