President Ellen Johnson seems to have had enough of some of what is considered as “distasteful” Social Media posts of her Education Minister, George Werner, the man who was few years ago charged with the responsibility of lifting the country’s education system from mess.
“Sirleaf has told Education George Werner that his recent statement on Social Media is unbecoming and inconsistent with his position as a senior official of government,” an Executive Mansion press release said in Monrovia on Tuesday.
Some of the Facebook postings of the Education Ministry boss in recent times have been characterized by vulgarism and invectives.
The release said the Liberian leader scolded Minister Werner in a conversation with him on Monday.
The President’s scolding drew an apology from Werner on his Facebook page hours later when he said: “I am aware, from feedback, of the severity of my indiscretion concerning my recent statement referring to some politicians taking advantage of Liberia as men would a sex worker.”
Werner, who is an avid Facebook user, further said “I regret the language used as it wasn’t reflective of my post as Minister of Education. If the VP, whom I hold in high esteem, felt personally offended by this, I apologize to him for the linguistic indiscretion.”
“The Liberian leader indicated further that the Minister’s Social Media statement is also a contradiction to and undermines her recent Special Statement on vulgarity, abuse and spread of hate messages by some Liberians during the Electoral process,” the release noted.
Meanwhile, President Sirleaf is warning “Minister Werner and all other officials of government to stop such attitude and act in ways consistent with their status as Public officials.”
