CAPITOL HILL, Monrovia -April 15, 2026–Nimba County District #5 Representative, Kortor S. Kwagrue has underscored the importance of investigating the operations of the Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC), urging fellow lawmakers to back a move to summon the company’s management before the House of Representatives.
In a formal request to Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, during the special sitting of the House, Rep. Kwagrue alarmed paramount concerns, raising technical and financial issues regarding the company’s concession agreement compliance with the Government of Liberia.
To execute its full oversight responsibility in matters concerning the country and its people, he urged plenary to initiate its oversight responsibility into Bea Mountain’s operations, which has recently raised doubts and controversy over the operational framework.
He then craved the support of the body to invite the management of BMMC to provide full disclosure and clarity on its operations, as a means of ensuring transparency, accountability, and the protection of national interests.
Kwagrue pointed out that there is a need to A review BMMC’s corporate income tax contributions over the past three fiscal years, including verification with records from the Liberia Revenue Authority.
On the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the Liberian lawmaker emphasized the significance of the assessment of the company’s social investments in affected communities, detailing projects, financial commitments, beneficiaries, and implementation status to be delineated by them when they come before plenary.
He added that they should deliberate on their Concession Agreement Compliance of 2023, noting that they report their comprehensive evaluation of BMMC’s adherence to its contractual obligations, including financial responsibilities, environmental standards, community development provisions, and statutory reporting requirements.
“These matters are significant to the nation especially at the time when our country seeks to maximize revenue with its natural resources, while ensuring that concession agreements bring tangible benefits to our people”, Kwagrue expressed in his communication.
Strengthening oversight in this sector, according to him, will enhance public trust and promote equitable development, calling on members of the House to attach urgency to the matter in order to cite the management of Bea Mountain to provide update to the Liberian people through their principal deputies.
“I therefore urge this august body that this request be treated with the urgency it deserves that appropriate action be taken to ensure full compliance and accountability”, Kwagrue intimated.
The lawmaker’s decision to request the House to investigate Bea Mountain ensued from a recent disclosure of the company, revealing that it generates around 900 kilograms of gold monthly, totaling roughly US$1.65 billion annually.
However, this announcement sparked controversy, with reports suggesting actual extraction is higher and that the company extracts around 1,271 kilograms monthly, leading to debate over revenue transparency and community benefits.
Following the reading of the communication, the plenary of the House of Representatives took a decision, commissioning the Committees on Investment and Commission, Mine and Energy, Hydrogen Carbon, and Public Account for financial and operational examination. These committees are expected report to plenary in two weeks upon their return, which is expected in May.
The House also instructed the listed committees to visit the concession during the period of the investigation so as to provide insightful report to the House that will precipitate a decision into the matter.
