Off-Season Preparation For Beginning Of Liberia’s Domestic League

It is expected to be a tense encounter at a packed Sanniquellie stadium outside Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, as football lovers from across the country can’t wait to watch football actions in an off-season tournament named and style, Jungle Water 2023 Cup.

This off-season tournament helps teams get prepared for domestic football in our Country.

This year’s edition marks the third off-season tournament organized and sponsored by the Jungle Water Group of Investment (JWGI) owned by a top Liberian Businessman, Mr. Floyd Tomah.

The tournament was first unveiled in 2021 with Sanniquellie being the first venue. This is the capital city of Liberia’s northeastern Nimba County.

For the second successive time, Sanniquellie city will again play host to this off-season soccer fiesta from August 20-24, 2023 at the Tomah Seh Floyd Stadium, but first since the Sanniquellie sports pitch was renamed Tomah Seh Floyd Stadium.

Speaking via mobile phone on the local radio show in Margibi County, Weekend  Supersports Saturday, August 19, 2023, tournament Chairperson Anthony Tokpah said that this year’s edition of the Jungle Water Cup will see 10 clubs competing for this prestigious trophy, with two clubs making  the official on Sunday.

“Let me make this clear here this time around clubs send in the request or intent through our advertisement of those wanting to be a part of the off-season tournament like the previous one where we invite clubs on invitation,” said Tokpah the competition chairperson.

Mr. Tokpah disclosed that the tournament aim is to brand the institution, The Jungle Water Group of Investment (JWGI) through sports promotion.

The 2023 edition of this off-season league Chairperson, Tokpah explained that clubs participating will received LD 10,000.00 or 20, 000.00 based on the area of locality which will include lodging for all the clubs.

He said that the tournament starts on Sunday, 20 August and ends on Thursday, 24 August.

In addition to the preparation fees, Chairman Tokpah said teams will be given progress fees at every stage of the tournament (progress fees will be half of whatever amount they previously received as subsidy/preparation funds).

Ganta-based Gompa Football Club has been invited to participate in the third edition of the highly anticipated Jungle Water Cup 2023.This follows the withdrawal of Jubilee FC.

The Nimba County 3rd Division outfit will replace the Church Boys. Gompa earlier applied to participate in the pre-season competition, but their application was not considered due to misunderstanding over the identity of the club.

As for the Church Boys of Jubilee FC, the team communicated their withdrawal from the tournament to the organizers on Friday evening, making them the third team to withdraw from this year’s episode of the off-season comp

Gompa FC will face Second Division side, Gardnersville FC in the Jungle Water Cup on Monday, 21 August at the Tomah Seh Floyd Stadium in Sanniqullie, where the tournament will be conducted over the next five days.

Both Gompa FC and Phebe Athletic will be marking their first appearance in the competition, which is on for the third year running. The Jungle Water Cup 2023 will kick off on Sunday, August 20, 2023 in Sanniquellie.

The tournament was earlier on expected to kick off on the 24th of August 2023 in Ganta City, Nimba County.

This year’s edition is expected to bring together ten (10) teams from across Nimba, with two women soccer teams participating in the 3rd edition for the first time.

Host Nimba Kwado defeated LISCR FC in Ganta, Nimba County to clinch the second edition of the Jungle Water Cup. The winner of year’s edition will pocket LD $100,000.000, while individual winners earned to walk away with cash prizes.
