Thunder FC are on the verge of making history in the LFA Margibi Sub-Association 3rd Division League, needing just one more victory to secure the championship in their debut season.
The Thinker Village-based side boosted their title hopes with an impressive 4-2 win over Romell FC on Wednesday, April 8, at the Unification Sports Pitch in Smell No Taste. The result marked their 10th match of the season and further extended their lead at the top of the standings.
Leading goal scorer Thomas Mathis opened the scoring, while Sunnboy Gountoah and Vasco David—who grabbed a brace—sealed a convincing win for Thunder FC. The team now sits comfortably on 25 points, six points ahead of second-place Champions FC, who have 19 points with two games remaining.
In 10 matches played, Thunder FC have recorded an outstanding run of 8 wins, 1 draw, and just 1 defeat. Notably, Jabu FC remain the only team to have defeated Thunder FC this season, achieving the feat during the second phase at the Unification Sports Pitch.
Thunder FC’s next fixture is against Howard FC, with the date yet to be announced. A win in that encounter will officially crown them champions of the Lower Sub-Committee—an extraordinary achievement for a club in its first season in Margibi County.
The club has already secured qualification for the National 3rd Division Promotional Playoffs, marking a historic milestone since its establishment. They will represent Margibi County alongside Upper Sub-Committee champions Quincy FC.
Following the conclusion of both sub-committee leagues later this month, the two champions will clash to determine the overall county champion. Previous format, Africa Sports Academy claimed the title after defeating Weintown United FC.
Founded in 2019, Thunder FC previously competed in the Montserrado ELWA Sub-Committee before relocating to Margibi County for the 2025/2026 season.
With ambitions of gaining promotion to the second division, the club reinforced its squad with several key players, including Thomas Mathis (8 goals in 10 matches), Andy Joko, Boimah Dixon, Alan Cooper, Kingsley Okumo, Michel M. David, Jeremiah Sibley, Tumon Neuville and Otis Varney.
The team is currently coached by Garnayee Clinton, while Ralph Kyne Morris serves as the club’s Chief Executive Officer.
