A group under the banner, Progressive Student Movement of Nimba wants the government of Liberia reopen schools, especially tertiary institutions, amid an announcement by the Education Ministry of plans to reopen schools in phases in August.

According to the students, the government has reopened churches and Mosque but schools, especially tertiary schools still remain closed.

According to the Secretary General of the movement, Menlekeh W. Gbuapaye, the continue closure of schools has the propensity to impair the learning process of the student populace of the country.

“The continuous closure of schools has the propensity to impair our learning process.”

According to the aggrieved students, their actions Stern from a petition they gave to the DEO of Baingar school District, who is a direct proxy of the Minister of Education. According to them, the petition was accompanied by a seven day ultimatum.

But contrary to their quest, the DEO has failed to adhere to their plight.

Prior to their actions, the DEO of Baingar Educational District, Mr. Abel Legay promised to meet them but did not live up to his promise thereby leaving them with no other alternative but to lock the office.

“Since we present out petition seven days ago, the DEO Mr. Legay promised to meet us but failed to do so. His failure left us with no alternative but to lock his office,” the students Movement’s Secretary General said.

Mr. Gbuapay also asserted that the CEO of Nimba County, Mr. Moses Dologbaye also promised to meet them today, July 29, 2020 but also did not turn up.

He said the students also received calls that the meeting has been rescheduled for Friday, July 31, 2020.

The Secretary General of the students movement also indicated that if their plight is not addressed in the impending meeting, they will disrupt the ongoing WASSCE preparation.

“Today again, the CEO Mr. Dologbaye promised to meet us but did not turn up for the meeting but informed us that the meeting has been rescheduled for Friday July 31 2020. But we want to be categorically clear that if our plight is not addressed in the pending meeting, we will disrupt the ongoing WASSCE preparation,” he concluded.

Article 6 of 1986 constitution of the Republic Of Liberia gives everyone the right to equal and quality education.
