Tubman University President threatens to expel students for protest

HARPER, Liberia–The   President of Liberia’s second state-owned University, the William V S Tubman University in southeastern Maryland County has threatened to expel four top students that will engage in any form of “unnecessary protest” on the Campuses of the University.

Dr. Elliot Wreh Wilson is Tubman University’s   third President since gaining its University status in September of 2009 from the Commission on High Education. That was during the administration of former Liberian President and her   former ruling Unity Party.

This institution has six Colleges and a Pre –College called Access to College.

Recently, the Concerned Students of Tubman University gathered at various Campuses of the University peacefully protesting and demanding that Government of Liberia paid salaries owed the institution Professors and the immediate Reopening of the shutdown Tubman University. The protest saw students Closing Down Government Agencies and Ministries which include the Ministries of Internal Affairs, Mines and Energy, Youth and Sports, Liberia Revenue Authority, the Harper Port (NPA), Justice amongst others.

The student’s reaction was in solidarity with their lecturers and Professors who were demanding their two months salaries from the George Weah lead Government.

Speaking at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the William V.S. Tubman University Commonly as Tubman University the Institution recently, TU President Wreh-Wilson said: “I will expel the top for students that will engage in any unnecessary  protest that will cause embarrassment for My  Administration and thank God I’m saying it in front of the County superintendent and the internal affairs minister.”

The Celebration was graced by the Minister of Internal Affairs  Varney Sirleaf ,the National Identification Registry  Executive Director J.Tiah Nagbe ,Tubman University Acting Board Chairperson and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Francis  Nah Karteh  and Maryland County Superintendent George A. Prowd, Golden Verolum Liberia New Chief Excuetive Officer , Representatives of both Cavalla Rubber Cooperation and the Maryland Oil Plam Plantation alongside other high profile delegates was held at the University  Graduation  Stand  value 180,000 on its main Campus in Tubman Town outside of Harper City .

“I’m not paying Attention to any protest but using my time to look for money for the institution   and improving the university campuses,” the TU President asserted.

The Tubaman Univeristy President that friend on students of the Univeristy for Protesting, something he said drew the attention s of the Liberian Governments ,the Wolrd Bank and other international Partners as well.

Dr. Wreh-Wilson is however appealing to the Government of Liberia, Scholarship Donors and Partners for increase in budgetary support to the University.

He disclosed that since he took over as President of the University, the Institution has been going through financial   difficulties which possess   serious tension on his back as head of the institution.

Tubman University is the only institution of higher learning operating in Maryland County.
