JOHNSONVILLE, Liberia – The Resident Bishop of the Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Bishop Samuel J. Quire Jr. has called on graduates of the United Methodist University (UMU) to embrace faith, integrity, and service as they step into the next phase of their lives.
Delivering the keynote address at the University’s 21st Commencement Convocation, Bishop Quire challenged members of the Class of 2026 to see their academic achievement not just as a personal milestone, but as a responsibility to contribute meaningfully to society.
Speaking in a reflective and inspiring tone, Bishop Quire likened the graduates’ academic journey to a story marked by perseverance, sacrifice, and divine intervention. He noted that many students faced significant challenges during their time at the University, including financial constraints, academic pressures, and moments of uncertainty.
“Your journey has not been easy,” he said. “There were times when the road seemed unclear and the obstacles overwhelming. But through faith and determination, you pressed forward. Today, your success stands as a testimony that indeed, ‘God did it.’”
Referencing the class theme, “Gala Kel El” (God Did It), the Bishop emphasized the importance of recognizing God’s hand in their accomplishments. He urged the graduates to remain grounded in their faith, especially as they transition into professional life.
Bishop Quire further encouraged the graduates to use their education as a tool for positive change, particularly in Liberia and beyond. He stressed that the nation is in need of individuals who are not only academically qualified but also guided by strong moral principles.
“The world you are entering is filled with both opportunities and challenges,” he stated. “Do not measure success only by wealth or status, but by the impact you make in the lives of others and the integrity you uphold.”
He called on the graduates to become agents of transformation in their respective fields, advocating for honesty, unity, and service to humanity. According to him, true leadership is demonstrated through compassion, accountability, and a commitment to the common good.
The Bishop also expressed appreciation to parents and guardians for their sacrifices, as well as to the University’s administration and faculty for their dedication to nurturing future leaders.
“To the parents and guardians, your support has made this day possible,” he said. “And to the faculty and administration, your commitment to excellence continues to shape lives and build the future of our nation.”
In closing, Bishop Quire urged the graduates to remain steadfast in their faith and to continually seek God’s guidance in all their endeavors.
“As you move forward, remember the values instilled in you,” he concluded. “Carry your faith, serve with purpose, and let your lives reflect the truth that through all things, God remains the source of your strength.”
The 21st Commencement Convocation of the United Methodist University brought together distinguished guests, academic leaders, and proud families in celebration of the achievements of the Class of 2026.
