Western Region Journalists Association Formed In Liberia

Tubmanburg, Bomi County – The Western Region Journalists Association (#WReJA) is proud to announce its official formation, comprising of dedicated group of media professionals committed to upholding the highest journalism standards and serving the public interest.

With its motto “The Same Media Serving the Public Interest,” the association aims to foster collaboration, professional development, and advocacy within the journalism community in the Western Region of Liberia.

The WReJA recognizes the crucial role the media plays in shaping public opinion, promoting transparency, and ensuring democratic processes are upheld.

By bringing together journalists, reporters, editors, and media practitioners from across Gbarpolu, Bomi, and Grand Cape Mount Counties, the association seeks to strengthen the media landscape and enhance its positive impacts on society.

To mark its inception, the WReJA will be hosting its inaugural media conference in Tubmanburg, Bomi County in August 2023.

Arrival day for invited guests and other journalists from Cape Mount and Gbarpolu Counties to grace the event is Thursday, August 3, 2023.

The conference runs from August 3-5 under the theme “The Same Media for the Promotion of Peaceful Elections.”

It will provide a platform for journalists, stakeholders, and experts to engage in insightful discussions, share best practices, and explore strategies to ensure fair and peaceful elections.

The conference agenda will cover a wide range of topics, including responsible reporting, and the role of the media in fostering inclusivity and preventing misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation during electoral processes.

Renowned journalists, academics, and professionals from various fields will deliver keynote speeches, participate in panel discussions, and conduct interactive workshops, providing invaluable insights and expertise.

Hon. G. Wesseh Blamoh, Liberia’s Minister of State for Presidential Affairs has accepted our invitation to serve as Keynote Speaker.

We have asked him to speak on the topic: The Role of the Media in Serving the Public Interest.’

We believe that by focusing on the importance of media in promoting peaceful elections, the WReJA aims to contribute to the development of transparent and credible democratic processes not just in the Western Region but in Liberia at large.

By upholding the principles of accuracy, impartiality, and fairness, the association seeks to ensure that the media remain a reliable source of information for the public during electoral periods.

The WReJA invites all journalists, media organizations, civil society groups, and interested parties to join in this momentous occasion.

By collaborating and exchanging ideas, we can collectively work towards building a robust media ecosystem that serves the public interest and strengthens democracy.

The Western Region Journalists Association is a combination of radio stations and freelancers dedicated to promoting excellence in journalism and advocating for the public interest in Western Liberia.

WReJA has over 90 journalists from Bomi, Gbarpolu, and Grand Cape Mount Counties.

The association aims to strengthen the media landscape and ensure responsible and ethical journalism practices.
