“We have all the capacity and equipment to roll out my program in Paynesville and are ready and prepared to clean the city through our initiatives and idea. I got inspired when they said Liberia was the dirtiest county, so,” says Joseta Neufville Wento.

Mrs. Wento, the Chief Executive Officer of a waste management group called Real Dumpa Hero Incorporated, has said her institution is ready and prepared to clean Paynesville City and admits the waste challenge in the City.

Dumpa Hero Incorporated, which is a one hundred percent Liberian owned company, is an innovative and environmentally conscious waste management company aiming to clean the environment.

The innovative company is currently offering the following services, waste management training, garbage collection, and disposal from households and industries.

They also offer to rent and sell waste management-related products, streets and drainage cleaning, landscaping and gardening, and city beautification among others.

According to Mrs. Joseta Neufville Wento CEO of the company said, the real Dumpa Hero offers an on-call waste call waste collection service, emergency pick up, yard cleaning, and fumigation with a manual subscription system to collect separated waste.

“The need for waste management cannot be overemphasized, considering how urgent it is to keep our environment clean to avoid the outbreak of many communicable diseases associated with unsanitary environments,” Mrs. Wento explains.

Speaking in an interview Wednesday, December 7, 2022, in Monrovia, Mrs. Wento noted that the project started with community engagement educating community residents about waste management beginning with the Samuel Dahn Community in Paynesville City.

She maintained that government cannot do all alone noting that her initiative or idea is to support the government’s efforts in providing a safe and clean environment for all citizens.

She narrated that her company will create awareness and help improve communities and Liberia by creating job opportunities through the waste management program.

The institution is currently engaging and training community dwellers on waste management and the danger of exposing waste in homes and communities.

The community engagement is currently taking place in the Samuel Dahn Community on the GSA road in Paynesville City.

Meanwhile, the Management of Dumpa Hero has disclosed a major cleaner exercise this December in Paynesville beginning with the GSA road Community aimed at giving the community a good look ahead of the Christmas celebration in the country.

The population of Monrovia is increasing accompanied by rapid urbanization. Due to rapid urbanization, economic development, higher living standards, and changes in consumption patterns and lifestyle, the generation rate of waste have increased.

Mismanagement of solid waste tends to hinder any progress toward environmental sustainability.

This study endeavored to determine the adequacy of waste management services in the city, and explore the linkage between population and development and the increase in the generation of waste.

The study assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively behavioral factors including knowledge, attitude, and practices of solid waste management, collaboration among stakeholders, and challenges related to sustainable waste management in Monrovia.

Households were selected randomly (simple and stratified) to show the socio-economic groups in the city.

Purposive sampling was used to identify key informants or personnel in charge of waste management and the use of questionnaires captured vital information on waste management in the city.

The major findings showed the main proportion of the waste generated in Monrovia was organic refuse (40.2%) followed by plastic (14.2%). Waste generated are inadequately disposed of due to the inadequate collection system, an as large fragment of waste remains uncollected resulting in open dumping and burning of wastes.

These waste management challenges have become heightened as a result of insufficient technology to ensure proper management, low budgetary allocations for effective waste management, lack of skilled professionals, poor implementation of regulations to ensure adequate management, and poor public awareness.
