At Long Last, Liberian Gov’t Entities To Pay Electricity Bills To LEC—World Bank Executives Told

The interim management of the Liberia Electricity Corporation is expected to begin placing prepay meters on all government’s ministries, commissions, bureaus, authorities and agencies effective next month, the LEC management told the top level World Bank delegation who visit the country earlier this week.

Before now, most government institutions, including Lawmakers at the Capitol Building, the Executive Mansion and other ministries and agencies have been consuming power from the national grid without paying for the services.

LEC interim Managing Director, Thomas Gonkerwon disclosed that the pre-paid meters will enable all government institutions to begin paying electricity bills

Mr. Gonkerwon made the disclosure during a presentation of LEC’s plan on expansion program, increasing electricity supply and income generation mechanism when the high power delegation toured the Mount Coffee Power Plant in the Township of White plain in Montserrado County recently in the presence of the World Bank’s Vice President Ousmane Diagana and delegation.

He said this is necessary to strengthen the LEC’s financial base in addressing most of the challenges facing the entity so as to expand the services in rural Liberia.

Gonkerwon also maintained that the LEC will begin opening offices in the 73 districts; but, the process will start with five regions including Kakata, Robertsfield , Bushrold Island, Buchanan among others

For his part, the head of the delegation of the World Bank, Ousmane Diagana, who is also the World Bank’s Vice President for Western and Central Africa, expressed satisfaction on the work done by LEC thus far.

He congratulated the LEC on the observance of its anniversary and assured the corporation of the World Bank’s fullest cooperation in the discharge

Mr. Diagana assured the LEC management of the World Bank’s continuous support and he stressed the need to extend its electricity to rural dwellers so as to benefit from its services

The visiting high power delegation of the World Bank toured the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant, the CLSG Electrical Plant among other facilities operated by the Liberia Electricity Corporation is funding in Liberia.by the World Bank.
