COVID-19 Awareness Heats Up In Southeastern Liberia

PLEEBO, Liberia- A Community-based organization in the southeastern city of Pleebo, Maryland County, Volunteer for Healthy Liberia has joined several other group to intensify awareness and education of citizens on measures to stop the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, which has seen cases from here, River Gee and Grand Kru Counties.

Pleebo is over 611 kilometers from Monrovia.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Volunteer for Healthy Liberia, Theophlius Tues Quayee, they have stepped up their campaign in “educating our People about the Preventive Measures and telling them to stay home and be safe that Coronavirus is Real and people should stop saying that the Liberian Government  want to get Money.”

“We are buttressing the  Liberian   Government Effort during this Pandemic that is unfolding we have had two successful awareness  across Pleebo, which is one of the most populated cities in Liberia  and we have cover six Communities in Pleebo and we will be reaching out to other parts of the County very soon,” Mr. Quayee said.

He spoke of the challenges faced in conducting this exercise, but he said they are committed to ensuring that the messages get out and that people keep safe from this killer virus.

“It’s very Challenging for us that are working in the field  Creating the Awareness and Educating our People about COVID-19,We walk from Community To Community just to Educate them,“ said Mr. Quayee.

The Legal head of the Volunteer for Healthy Liberia said his organization is a Social   and non -Political Organization that seeks to give back to the Community in whatever way they can.

According to him, their awareness campaign is not limited to Pleebo.

“We are taking  it across the entire  County  we need financial support from International and national partners to do this.”

Maryland County has three Political Districts, which include Harper, Pleebo and Karluway along with other Administrative Districts. The County is being representedin both the House of Representatives and the Liberian Senate.

“We also intend to reach out   to the Liberian Villages and towns along the Cavalla River that serves as the Boundary  between Liberia and Ivory Coast,  to informed our People adequately   about the Deadly  Pandemic.“

During our first two awareness in the six Communities, I observed that the women are  still doubting the existence of Coronavirus In Liberia  and Maryland, but men have been very cooperative.

He in furtherance said that Members of his Organization are finding it difficult to provide Transportation and Food when we are going into the felid for Awareness.

I want the Liberian Government to encourage Youth and Young People and cooperate them so that we can fight this Virus together; this virus is not one Person Business but Everyone Business.

Mr. Quayee added: ”We have not received many donations from our policy makers, only Senator H. Dan Morias, the Senate Chair of Foreign Affairs and Senatorial hopeful, Mr .Erick Geko of the Alternative National Congress and I want to personally thanked them for their Support toward Organization.”

Speaking to www.newspublictrust.com , Mr. Quaye has appealed to Lawmakers who have not made any  donation  to Marylanders  to follow their colleague’s action  during this time and join  hands with his community-based organization “as we fight the Coronavirus together”.

Last week, the GENTLEMAN CLUB in Harper was seen on the principles streets of this southeastern Liberian city creating awareness about COVID-19. Members of this club were later seen in Pleebo City, several miles away the following week creating more Awareness about this deadly virus.
