Seventy-one persons have died in traffic road accidents on Liberian roads in the last three months of 2026, while hundreds of other have sustained injuries, says the Quarterly report of the Liberia National Police (LNP).
The report released over the weekend, records a total of 309 injuries from 478 road traffic accident across this West African country in the months of January, February and March of this year.
The last month of the quarter, March saw a surge in the number of road traffic accidents, with 186 cases reported.
According to the police data, “car-to-car collision were the most prevalent type of accidents, followed by motorcycle-related incidents, together accounting for nearly 70 percent of all recorded cases.”
Motorcycles are widely used for commercial transportation in the capital, Monrovia and around the country.
Montserrado County, where the capital city, Monrovia is situated is said to have recorded the highest number of accidents, amounting to 279 cases, closely followed by the northeastern Nimba County and River Gee and Margibi Counties in the southeast and the central belt, respectively.
Meanwhile, Police Spokesman Sam Collins has attributed the high number of road accidents to several factors including high number untrained drivers in the traffic, reckless and drunk driving.
According to him, the Liberian National Police have begun taking measures to address the situation.
