Many People Made Homeless By Heavy Rainstorm In Gbarnga, Liberia

A violent rainstorm has left dozens of people homeless and destroyed many houses in the tone of thousands of dollars in central Bong County.

Some of the victims said unspecified amount of cash they had in their homes also within these houses when the rainstorm hit the area last Sunday, November 21, 2021.

Women, children and old folks are among those affected by the rainstorm.

Some residents of Gbarnga have attributed Sunday’s violent rainstorm to the continuous cutting of trees in the area in the name of beautifying homes or communities.

Speaking to this outlet in Gbarnga, the displaced residents said they are presently struck in the homes of their neighbors, while in desperate need of finance and material assistance.

Speaking on behalf of the victims, two of the most affected victims, Elijah Dogbah and Sadiah Sinoe, maintained that the heavy storm swept away many of their belongings thus making majority of them frustrated without any hope of returning to school subsequently.

One report said the rainstorm started around 7 Pm Saturday evening and went for hours into the early hours of Sunday morning, thus leading to the massive destruction.

The homeless residents of Gbarnga are in urgent need of building materials such as zinc, nails, mattresses and planks to rebuild their damaged homes.

The total number of victims is yet to be established, but Elijah and Sinoe believe that a little over hundred individuals have been made homeless.

Meanwhile, the Kokoyah road occupants then used the medium to appeal to the National Disaster Management Agency, NGOs and other humanitarians to restore their lost hope.

But up to press time, there has been no intervention made, as many of the victims are currently sleeping with their neighbors in the County.

In recent times, heavy rainstorm and flooding have hit various parts of Bong County, thus causing serious damage of homes, business centers, and other properties.

This natural disaster has caught the attention of hundreds of citizens, thereby calling for swift intervention in these occurrences.

There is generally little or no support received by the victims so far, as the management of the National Disaster Management Agency in the county has complained of low budgetary support.
