The pitch-dark Monrovia-Roberts International Airport highway has again seen another tragic motor accident, with Montserrado County District #15 Representative Adolph Lawrence being the latest casualty.
Reports say the Lawmaker was Chairman of the House Committee on Lands, Natural Resources and the Environment. He was returning to Monrovia from Buchanan, Grand Bassa County late Sunday evening, when his vehicle collided with a smoking truck which was transporting timber.
The lack of street light on the highway leading to the country’s only international airport has over the years led to an untold number of fatal motor accidents, with that road itself at night being seen by many as a death trap.
Illumination or visibility at night is key to road traffic safety.
On his arrival to launch a light to learn program to provide solar light to some institutions back in October 2016, he deplored the darkness on the RIA highway. But yet to date, the situation remains the same.
Rep. Lawrence, who won a landslide second term in the 2917 election, was returning to the capital after celebrating his birthday with his wife, Grand Bassa County Representative Nyongblee Karngar-Lawrence.
Also killed in the accident was a female, whose name is not immediately know.
The local Fabric FM radio’s Legislative Correspondent, Trojan Kiazolu reported early Monday Morning from the John F. Kennedy Medical Center that lawmakers gathered there were in deep shock over the sudden passing of their colleague as his remains were deposited there.
He said the outpouring of grief was so strong that one of Lawrence’s colleagues, Margibi County Representative Ive Jones was so shaken that sat on the bare floor at the hospital.
Reports quotes Police Inspector General Patrick Sudue as saying the impact of the crash was so severe that the vehicle had to be ripped open to get Rep. Lawrence’s body out.
Meanwhile, other occupants of the Lawmaker’s vehicle are said to be taking treatment in hospital.
