New Project On Household Economic Analysis Launched In Liberia

A project, titled: “Support for the Strengthening of Food and Nutrition Crisis Prevention and Management Systems in West Africa and the Sahel,” is supported by the European Union in Liberia.

As part of this project, an international nongovernmental organization, the Action Against Hunger in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture has launched a new project known as the Household Economic Analysis in Monrovia.

Speaking at the official launch of the project in Monrovia recently, the Program Coordinator of the Action Against Hunger, Jacob Tengbeh said that the project is intended to work with national and regional institutions to strengthen the mechanism for the prevention and management of food and nutrition information systems.

Mr. Tengbeh , who spoke on behalf of the organization’s Country Representative, Matej  Skenderovic,  noted that the project will focus on building and strengthening the capacities national institutions and civil society organizations.

This, he said, will be done through the transfer of expertise, technical support and sustainable appropriation of methodologies and processes that will guarantee the quality and reliability of analyses within the regional systems.

Mr. Tengbeh  added that the project is also aimed at re-enforcing technical collaboration between NGOs, the civil society organizations and early  warning systems  and the permanent interstate committee for drought control in the Sahel .

He indicated that the multi-country and multi-level approach was proposed to support the efficient and sustainable implementation of data collection and analysis, dissemination information, and putting in place the necessary conditions for sustainable and durable national information system.

“Based on this back ground, we are confident that the result of the project will make it possible to consolidate a real exit strategy and the disengagement of international NGOs by strengthening government institution structures and national as well as regional civil society organizations in the ways,” Mr. Temgbeh went on.

The Action Against Hunger Program Coordinator maintained that the institutionalization of the Household Economic Analysis approach within the country will lead to outcome analysis and the regular production analysis providing evidence on household food consumption.

“Secondly,”  he explained , “It will lead to a better understanding of populations’ vulnerabilities to food and nutritional insecurity because the household economic analysis results are essential for fueling ongoing discussions on improving response mechanisms and building resilience , particularly for the component targeting vulnerable household to implement response to food and nutrition crisis.”

According to Mr. Tengbeh,  the project will continue a pool of household economic expects at the national and regional levels , who will work in close collaboration with Save The Children regional office for the continuous training of food and nutrition security analysis at country level.

The launching of the project was facilitated by three experts from the regional office of Save The Children based in Dakar, Senegal.

The launching ceremony brought together representatives from the agricultural sectors throughout Liberia.
