Pres. Weah Tells Citizens: “There’s No Need To Panic”-As Coronavirus Hits Liberia

Shortly after Liberia announced its first case of Coronavirus on Monday, President George Manneh Weah has addressed the nation assuring that his CDC government is taking every preventive measures and actions at all ports of entry.

He said while the COVID-19 virus “represents the greatest threat to the health of the Liberian people since the outbreak of the Ebola virus,” he urged citizens that

“there is no need to panic”.

Liberia has now joined the list of countries in Africa and around the world with Coronavirus on Monday, March 16, 2020. The person proven positive is a Liberian official, who returned to the country few days ago from Switzerland. He is the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Nathaniel Blama. 

With the discovery of the first case of this deadly virus now, President Weah said “Liberia has moved from a precautionary stage to a containment stage.”

But he said this country will count on international support to fight the pandemic, which is raging around the world, with Europe now being the worst hit.

Meanwhile, the Liberian leader disclosed that a number of people who came on board the flight with the head of the EPA, Nathaniel Blama have slipped away and have not allowed themselves to be quarantine.

But the government has ordered that they immediately report themselves to health authorities.

President Weah announced several measure (details later).

He called on all Liberians and others in the country that it is very important to follow the safety protocol by regularly washing their hands with soap and running water, stop shaking hands and keeping distance from contact with people.

Announcing yet another postponement of his pending national tour of Liberia’s 15 counties, President Weah has also called on citizens and residents to avoid all public gathering of large crowds.
