KAKATA, Liberia– Tragedy struck Peace Island Community in Kakata City, Margibi County today, Wednesday afternoon (August 19, 2026), when the wall of a residential building collapsed, killing four children and leaving three others in serious condition at the Kakata Health Center.
This area is some 70 kilometers from Monrovia. The incident, according to an initial report filed by the Liberia National Police Crime Services Department, occurred Wednesday afternoon.
The victims
Police say seven children, all residents of the same house in Peace Island, were trapped when the wall gave way.
Four of the children were pronounced dead on arrival at Kakata Health Center including Mohammed Tuore, 4, male, Mandingo
Moses Fayiah, 2, male, Kissi *Christian Kollie*, 1, male, Kpelle
– *Miata Forkpah*, 9, female, Kpelle
Three others survived and remain hospitalized in serious condition:
– *J. Thurston P. Flomo*, 3, male, Kpelle
– *McGill Fayiah*, 16, male, Kissi
– *Dorcus Giddings*, 5, female, Kpelle
All victims are from Peace Island Community, Kakata City.
*How The Incident Was Reported*
Chief Superintendent Arthur K. Jarvay, OIC of the Margibi County Police Detachment, first notified the Crime Services Department by phone at 4:30 PM. A formal report was made at 5:00 PM and entered into the Police Occurrence Book under OB No. 312.
CSD Inspectors Michael B. Rogers and Lee A. Kehwalin were immediately dispatched to the scene and later to the Kakata Health Center Hospital to verify the circumstances and identify the victims.
Preliminary Findings
According to preliminary information, the children were inside the house when a wall collapsed on them, causing multiple injuries. The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been determined.
Police say key questions remain unanswered: the structural condition of the building, the identity of the owner or caretaker of the premises, and whether negligence, recklessness, or any other unlawful conduct contributed to the tragedy.
Police launch full investigation
The Crime Services Department has launched a full investigation into the incident. Investigators are working to:
- Establish ownership and occupancy of the house.
- Determine the condition and structural integrity of the collapsed wall
- Ascertain the circumstances* that led to the collapse
- Interview eyewitnesses, parents, relatives and guardians of the victims
- Obtain medical records and documentation on the deceased and injured children
- Determine if negligence or criminal conduct was involved and whether anyone should be held liable under the law
The investigation remains ongoing, and further facts will be established as additional witnesses are interviewed and relevant evidence is obtained,” the CSD report stated. A comprehensive investigative report will be submitted upon completion.
Community In Mourning
News of the deaths has left Peace Island and the wider Kakata community in mourning. The loss of four young lives in a single incident has raised fresh concerns about housing safety and building standards in rapidly growing communities across Margibi County.
Authorities have not said when the substantive findings of the investigation will be released.
