Tubman University Health Science College Capped & Badged 41 Students

HARPER, Liberia- About forty one students of the William VS Tubman University  (TU) Health Sciences Department were capped and batched over the weekend as part of the Institution’s 8th Capping ceremony.

Harper is situated in Maryland County, 403 kilometers southeast of Monrovia and the TU is one of Liberia’s two public universities.

Speaking at the occasion, Mrs. Lydia Wortee-Johnson, Chair of the Department of Nurses at the College of Health Sciences, expressed gratitude to the administration of the Tubman University for building that trust in her to lead the way of transforming lives through nurturing the nurse’s students.

This, she said, is part of the university’s mission and vision.Presenting the honorees to the Dean of the college of Health Sciences and the Nursing Board of Liberia, Mrs. Johnson said the nurses and midwifery departments prepared more students to become productive and skilled healthcare professionals to improve the health care delivery across Liberia.

” To fulfill our share goal in preparing a robust nursing workforce, the Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery acknowledge our full support of academic progression for nursing students,” said Mrs. Johnson,

She further told the gathering that the department of nursing and Midwifery in collaboration with the Liberia Board for Nursing and midwifery belief that every nursing student deserve the opportunity to pursue academic career growth and development.”

According to the TU Dean of the Health Science College, during the recruitment process of the clinical phase, 53 students enrolled in the nursing program of which 42 students made it through successfully.

Serving as Keyspeaker, Daniel Maweu, Nurse-Midwifery Coordinator and Education of Partners in Health Liberia, said the nurse’s field is a unique profession that requires a high level of maturity  and responsibility.

Speaking on the theme,”Developing Nurses Caring Hands that lead and transform,” Mr. Maweu said that nurses are natural innovators and they have the power to restore hope to their patients during their difficult times.

He was quick to mention that such can only be done if nurses in Liberia demonstrate a high level of Maturity and professionalism at their respective health facilities.
He emphasized that nurses should think out of the box and give their patients the best health care service.

”Don’t be complacent with this achievement, prepare yourself for a specialized field in the health sector, Liberia needs trained and specialized health workers, go out and be a problem solver, pay attention to your duty, respect your patients and supervisors, read more and be self-discipline, above all establish a good working relationship with the community people,“ said TU Nurses Department 8th capping and candle lighting program speaker.

Also speaking at the occasion,  William VS Tubman University President, Dr. Elliott Wreh-Wilson lauded the effort of the teaching staff, faculties of the college, and Partner in Health for their continued support and hard level of work in molding the minds of young Liberians who will restore hope to all through equality health delivery.

Dr. Wreh Wilson used the occasion to congratulate the honorees for their achievements and at the same time called on them to demonstrate a high level of professionalism as they embark on a long Health journey across Liberia.

”Today you have been capped and badged from among many students and this is a clear indication that you met the preliminary steps in becoming a profession Nurse, respect act all of your patients regardless of their status, background, people with different problems will come to you, do not  welcome them harshly because of their appearance”. said Dr. Willson.

For their part, the honorees solely pledge themselves before God and in the presence of the gathering to pass their life purity and to practice profession faithfully.

According to them, they will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drugs.
They vowed  to maintain the standard of professionalism  and self confidence at all times.

Meanwhile, The program which was observed under the theme ” Developing Nurses Caring Hands That Lead and Transform” brought together scores of students including relatives of the honorees, as well as the school’s authorities and local and national leaders in the sector.
