US Amb. Tonor Sends Out Stern Warning
Latest News From Washington Says The Trump Gov’t Plans To Fine Migrants Under Deportation Orders Up To $998
Liberia is said to have “the tenth highest overstay rate in the world”, says United States Ambassador to Liberia, Mark Chistopher Toner and the American Embassy in Liberia has launched an online publicity drive to warn citizens of this West African country of the “consequences”.
In a strongly worded OP-ED on the US Embassy Facebook page on Monday, the US envoy says:
“The plain truth is, almost twenty percent of Liberians, who visit the United States on a tourist visa do not leave at the end of their trip. Liberia has the tenth highest overstay rate in the world, and far too many Liberians resort to fraud in a desperate attempt to get a visa. So, I thought it might be helpful if I explain clearly and simply U.S. immigration law and the legal and national security rationale behind the laws.”
Ambassador Mark Toner, in Op-Ed titled 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Another message on the US Embassy’s Facebook page says: ”Illegal entry into the United States will lead to detention, deportation, and permanent negative consequences for future visa eligibility. Think before you act.
Before being posted to Liberia on August 2, 2024, Amb. Toner served as the Acting Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Global Public Affairs, where he played a key role in shaping the communication strategies of U.S. foreign policy.
Meanwhile, latest report from Washington by the Reuters News Agency says “the Trump administration plans to fine migrants under deportation orders up to $998 a day if they fail to leave the United States and to seize their property if they do not pay, according to documents reviewed by Reuters.”
