BARCLAYVILLE, Liberia — The Unity Party government of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has taken a major step in its nationwide road infrastructure drive, with the formal handover of 15 heavy-duty earth-moving equipment (yellow machines) to Liberia’s southeastern Grand Kru County, 600 kilometers from Monrovia.
This now brings government machinery closer to communities that have long struggled with poor road connectivity.
The equipment was officially handed over on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, following its arrival in Barclayville late last Monday evening.
The deployment forms part of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s broader infrastructure agenda and the government’s nationwide Yellow Machines Program, which seeks to place road construction and maintenance equipment directly within Liberia’s counties.
Under the initiative, the government plans to deploy 285 pieces of heavy-duty earth-moving equipment across all 15 counties, creating county-level capacity to rehabilitate roads, improve transportation corridors and expand access to farm-to-market routes.
Grand Kru is among the southeastern counties benefiting from the program, alongside Grand Gedeh, Maryland and River Gee.
Representing President Boakai at the handover ceremony, Deputy Coordinator for Technical Services of the Special Presidential Projects Committee (SPPC), Eng. Paul S. Wilson, said the deployment reflects the administration’s commitment to moving development resources beyond Monrovia and closer to the people.
According to Wilson, the program is designed to reduce the longstanding dependence on centralized road interventions by giving counties the machinery required to respond to their own infrastructure needs.
He assured residents that the central government, through the SPPC, will maintain responsibility for fueling the equipment, routine maintenance and the employment and payment of operators and drivers.
County authorities, he said, will identify priority roads and corridors—including farm-to-market roads, community roads and other critical routes—for rehabilitation.
The government’s intervention comes as Grand Kru continues to face significant road challenges that affect movement, commerce, agriculture and access to essential services.
Residents attending the ceremony welcomed the equipment and expressed hope that its deployment would translate into visible improvements across the county.
They also urged county authorities to ensure that the machinery is deployed based on road needs and reaches communities beyond Barclayville.
Grand Kru County Superintendent Antoinette W. Nimely praised the intervention, describing President Boakai as a “developmental hero” for delivering the equipment to the county.
The machinery is currently housed at a newly constructed equipment facility along the Barclayville–Sasstown corridor, with the Armed Forces of Liberia Engineering Battalion providing 24-hour security.
The arrival of the machines represents one of the administration’s most visible infrastructure interventions in Grand Kru to date, with the government now facing the next phase of the program: turning equipment deployment into actual road rehabilitation and improved access for citizens.
