SENATE PRESS RELEASE
The Liberian Senate under the leadership of President Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence – is expected to investigate reports of illicit mining activities currently underway in Gbarpolu County and across several other mining regions of Liberia.
โ
โThe Senate decision on Tuesday, June 2, 2026 – during its regular sitting – was triggered by a communication from Gbarpolu County Senator Amara Konneh.
โ
โSenator Konneh in his communication, noted that the vital waterways are being polluted, and vast tracts of land face severe, potentially irreversible environmental degradation that threatens the livelihoods, health, and safety of the rural constituents.
โ
โThe Senate investigation will focus on the root causes, specific actions, enforcement mechanisms, and remediation strategies – the respective government entities are actively taking to curb these reported illegal activities and mitigate the ongoing environmental damage.
โ
โAccording to him, these unregulated, unlawful extraction operations – often involving heavy dredging machines and unauthorized foreign actors – are wreaking havoc on local ecosystems.
โ
โFollowing these concerns raised, the Plenary of the Liberian Senate, has forwarded the matter to its committee on Mines and Energy – to take charge and carry on a very thorough investigation and report to Plenary for proper action in the interest of the Country.
