Zwedru, Liberia- A court in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County has given a nine-year prison sentence to a man convicted a man convicted of killing his girlfriend at the Bently Gold Mining Camp in District Number 1.

The Assigned Judge at the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court Korboi Nuta gave the final ruling after the trial jury came down with a unanimous guilty verdict against Mark P. Worzon, 22, on June 24, 2019.

The convict’s charge had earlier been commuted from murder to manslaughter after pleading guilty.

Mr. Worzon had pleaded for forgiveness, saying his action was influenced by intoxication and what he calls ‘generational curse’, as tears rolled down his cheeks, promising to be a productive citizen upon his release.

But the man representing the defense counsel Attorney G. Mark Kamgar differed with his client’s statement that he was “under generational curse”, clarifying that he was simply not normal at the time of the commission of the crime.

Following the judgment, Attorney Karngar pleaded for compassion on behalf of Worzon and a reduction of his prison sentence.

It can be recalled that on January 4, 2019, some residents of the Bently Gold Mining Company called in the Crime Services Department of the Liberia National Police in the county, after the mutilated body of Worzon’s girlfriend (Luckygirl Koon, 17) was discovered in a room. He subsequently escaped into hiding.

According to the police charge sheet, Worzon choked Luckygirl, holding her by her hair and blouse, consequently causing her tongue to come out.

It further reports that the victim and her eyes were swollen. Also on the crime scene were a hammer, razor blade, a twine rope and a belt, according to police.

Judge Nuta said it was unfortunate that Worzon will be spending nine years behind bars, but pointed out that he could be placed on parole after serving three years, once prison records show that he exhibited good conduct since his imprisonment.
