With some eleven months to the end of his six-year term of office, President George Manneh Weah and his CDC government has only been able to fully implement only 8% of the 292 promises made to the Liberian people during and after the 2017 presidential election, according to Naymote Partners for Democratic Development.

The President Meter Project Report just released, which covers the period January 2018-January 2023, Naymote assessed the five years of performance of President Weah since he took office on January 22, 2018.

Weah, the international football icon-turned politician and his C0alition for Democratic Change (CDC) party, ran their 2017 campaign on the “Pro-Poor Agenda” mantra. And the ruling CDC is poised to nominate Mr. Weah to contest in the October 20 election for a second term in office.

The President Meter Project assessment found that 292 promises were tracked, of which only 8% (24 promises) have been fully implemented by the government over the last five years.

Naymote says the assessment also found that the implementation of 91 promises (31% of all promises was ongoing during the reporting period. Therefore, out of all promises, attempts have been made on only 39% (the sum of those completed and those with ongoing activities).

Nearly two-thirds of all promises, 61% or 177 promises, were identified as ‘Not started/ not rated’ because the government had not commenced work on their implementation, and there was no available information on the status of those promises.

Previous reports including the one last year spoke of the need for politicians not only to make flowery promises but to keep the promises they make to the electorates. It was clear that results of assessments were clear that the Liberian leader needed to keep the numerous promises he has been making to citizens.

Political accountability is an essential element in ensuring that politicians are held to account for promises that they make during campaign period but also promises they make when elected, Naymote has repeatedly said.

The 2023 President Meter Project Report of Naymote also says the majority of the promises implemented are promises under Pillar 2 of the Manifesto (Economy and Jobs).

These constituted (56%) of all completed promises, the report says.
