Single barrel gun owners in Liberia to be licensed by Gov’t

-Owners of single barrel guns in Liberia are to obtain permit and license as a means of saving the community and maintaining peace,  the Chairman of Liberia National Commissioner on Small Arm Atty. T. Maxwell Grisby disclosed in Monrovia on Thursday.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information Thursday’s press briefing on January 30, 2020, Atty. Grisby said a stay order has been placed on West Africa for the importation of fire arm but there exception.

He said civilians are not allow to possess fire arm which back by the 2015 legislative law passed but again to every laws there are exceptions which allow hunters to process single barrel. But it must be registered and the owners obtain permit along with license.

The single barrel registration will distinguish the original hunters from that of none hunters and the registration will last for six months.

Single barrel registration cost US$50 or it’s equivalent in Liberian dollars (current exchange rate stands at 195 LD to one USD), which will be none refundable but small arm commission will be look track record of those who operating it such whether you are involve with domestic violence, arm robbery and mental problem among others. 

It was single barrel shot gun that was reportedly used to kill the German national in Grand Bassa County recently. And his alleged killer was arrested in Liberia’s central Bong County with the weapon and rounds of ammunition.

Training will also be given to those who will register and those will register their single barrel gun will have number  place on the permit and the same will also be placed on the license as a method to preserve peace. 

The Small Arm Commission is expected to launch the single barrel awareness and its registration this weekend.
