The rift between the outgoing ruling Unity Party (UP) and its Standard Bearer Emeritus, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has come to a head, with the UP’s National Executive Committee over the weekend announcing her expulsion from the party.

“The vote was taken as a result of several violations of the party’s constitution and other acts inimical to the existence and reputation of the party. Article VII Section 1(e) of the party’s constitution states the Obligation, Rights and Entitlements of Members of the Unity Party and Section 1(e) clearly spells out the role of partisans in elections: (e)To support the Unity Party’s candidate through campaigning for the election of the Unity Party candidate and to provide any other support within his /her capacities for any candidate of the Unity Party at any election; and (f)To demean and conduct himself/herself in a manner that would bring credit to the Unity Party at any election;” a press statement from the UP said.

The statement signed by Mohammed Ali, National Assistant Secretary General for Press and Public Affairs also announced the expulsion of two other leading members of the the UP.

They are River Gee County Senator Commany B. Wesseh and his wife Medina Wesseh who is currently Secretary General of the Mano River Union and Patrick Worzi, now a member of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).of the outgoing ruling Unity Party (UPynson SirleafFresh report says the outgoing ruling Unity Party (UP) has expelled its Standard Bearer Emeritus, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf from the party.

They accused President Sirleaf and the three others for campaigning against the UP during the 2017 elections.

“Throughout the 2017 election process, several calls were made by partisans to expel the Standard Bearer Emeritus, Mr. and Mrs. Wesseh for campaigning against the party’s Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates in gross violation of the party’s constitution,” the UP Executive Committee claimed.

According to the UP National Executive Committee, the decision to expel Sirleaf and others from the party took it a long time because it has to be established that those expelled had actually violated the constitution of the party.

It further said “the behavior of the expelled persons also constitute sabotage and undermined the existence of the party.”

“The public is hereby advised not to do any business with the expelled persons in the name of the party, for anyone doing so will be acting at his or her own risk,” the defeated ruling party concluded in its press statement.

The feud in the UP between the Boakai camp of the ruling Unity Party (UP) and that of the Standard Bearer Emeritus President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf remained intact up till the December 26, 2017 presidential runoff election.

UP executives repeated their claims that the Liberian leaders is fully backing the presidential bid of George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) against her deputy Joseph Boakai in Tuesday’s presidential runoff election, a claimed the Liberian leader has denied.

At the ground breaking ceremony for the Gbarnga-Salayea road co-performed by Weah just days before the runoff was seen by the anti-Sirleaf faction of UP as proof of the President’s support for Weah’s presidential bid.

UP’s spokesman Ali rubbished statement by River Gee County Senator Commany Wesseh on a local radio in the central city of Gbarnga that Vice President Boakai was officially invited to the ground breaking ceremony by the President and that she was not backing CDC.

The outgoing ruling party officials said VP Boakai that he was never invited to the Lofa road ceremony and in fact he did not know exactly when the ground breaking should have taken place.

The rift between Africa’s first elected female president and her own party has even deepened further, with the permit given to Weah’s CDC to use the newly removed Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Stadium for the holding of their final runoff campaign rally on Saturday.

The UP official claimed, “It was based on the instruction of the President…the CDC’s use of the SKD.”
