In the wake of the high maternal death rate in this West African county, Liberia’s Ministry of Health today, Friday, March 2026 announced the launch of a “365-day maternal mortality reduction campaign to significantly lower maternal and neonatal death rates nationwide.”

The report by the World Bank says although the maternal mortality ratio in Liberia has improved from 1,749 in 2000 to 628 in 2023, Maternal mortality in Liberia is higher than its regional average.
Maternal mortality ratio is the number of women who die from pregnancy-related causes while pregnant or within 42 days of pregnancy termination per 100,000 live births.”
Amid the gap in the country’s health workforce, the Ministry says in a press release published on its official Facebook page that “the move is intended to address workforce gaps and enhance direct patient care, particularly in maternal and neonatal health services.”

MOH to Launch 365-Day Maternal Mortality Campaign Nationwide
(MONROVIA, Liberia, March 20, 2026) —The Ministry of Health (MOH) is set to launch a nationwide 365-day maternal mortality reduction campaign to significantly lower maternal and neonatal death rates nationwide.
The campaign forms part of the ministry’s efforts to strengthen the healthcare system and improve outcomes for pregnant women and newborns.
As part of the rollout, the Ministry has begun deploying medical doctors, nurses, and midwives to health facilities across the 15 counties to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services.
In a major shift in policy implementation, health professionals currently serving in administrative roles at the Ministry have been assigned to clinical duties at hospitals and primary healthcare centers.
The move is intended to address workforce gaps and enhance direct patient care, particularly in maternal and neonatal health services.
