Buchanan, Grand Bassa County – Reports from the Grand Bassa County home base of the opposition Liberty Party’s presidential candidate, lawyer Charles Brumskine suggest that he was skeptical of achieving victory in Tuesday’s elections hours ahead of the polls.

Just before casting his ballot on October 10, 2017 before casting his ballots in his stronghold of Buchanan, some 88 miles from Monrovia, the LP presidential candidate expressed doubt that he would even receive the overwhelming backing of his Grand Bassa County kinsmen.

This reporter says Brumskine, who unsuccessfully contested two previous presidential elections in 2005 and 2011 coming third and fourth, shocked many who would have expected him to be certain of obtaining victory without any fear at least in his own stronghold.

But, speaking on polling day in Upper Buchanan, Brumskine was not sure of whether the electorates will vote for him.

“Your sure the Bassa People will not let me down?”  the Liberty Party Standard Bearer asked the electorates.

Brumskine’s skepticism might have been developed because of the recent heated campaign carried out against him and the Liberty Party by other Bassa political heavyweights such as former Senate President Pro Tempore Gbehzongar Findley.

Findley, who recently defected from the ruling Unity Party (UP) and joined ranks with George Weah’s opposition CDC, has a strong following in Grand Bassa County which is among the few counties with one of the highest number of registered voters.

Also, UP’s presidential candidate, Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai said it was a myth that Bassa was locked down by Brumskine.

“Grand Bassa County belongs to all Liberians regardless of tribe and that was why he came to celebrate with the loving people of this county,” Boakai said at a campaign rally in Buchanan ahead of the elections.

Despite his apprehension, Brumskine encouraged voters to persevere the whole day to vote for him.

“Everyone should make sure that his or her vote is counted and the will of the people will be reflected on the outcome of the election,” he encouraged his supporters.

Meanwhile, the Liberty Party Presidential Candidate has described the conduct of last Tuesday’s elections as peaceful, stressing, that everyone should accept the outcome of the election result as the will of the voters.
