A man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to cast two marked ballot papers in Liberia’s presidential runoff election.

Police in the capital, Monrovia are interrogating the man who was said to have been trying to put two marked ballot papers into the box in the Duport Road suburb of Monrovia.

Henry Flomo, the Communication Director of the National Elections Commission (NEC) confirmed the arrest of the man and said NEC officials were at the National Police headquarters, where a poll worker was also being interrogated.

Flomo told www.newspublictrust.com that a NEC female ballot issuing officer was alleged to have given the two ballots by the man.

He said the electoral body was leaving the matter in the hands of the police to probe.

Double voting is a crime in Liberia’s election law and the penalty include jail term and/fine depending on the gravity of the case.

Ahead of Tuesday’s runoff, NEC authorities have said they were putting all measures in place to ensure that the voting process goes on smoothly.

Lami Lighe, Executive Director of NEC said the quality of poll workers that have been recruited for Tuesday’s runoff has been improved and that more than one thousand additional queue controllers have now been hired by NEC.

“The commission wants to assure you of a free, fair and credible process,” Lighe said at the weekend.

The numbers of the various polling places have been printed on large size posters and will be displayed at various polling centers across Liberia.
