The Liberian government has announced plans to install smart electricity meters across the country as part of efforts to modernize the nation’s power distribution and billing system.
Speaking during the Information Ministry’s regular press briefing in Monrovia today, Thursday, October 1, 2026, Deputy Minister for Press and Public Affairs Daniel Sando said the initiative is intended to replace the manual billing system with technology that can remotely measure customers’ actual electricity consumption.
Deputy Minister Sando said the smart meters will also support prepaid electricity services and improve the monitoring of technical and commercial losses within the electricity sector.
According to him, the installation exercise is expected to begin in Paynesville on October 7, 2026. He added that customers will be able to purchase electricity through digital payment platforms under the new system.
