New York, September 30, 2026—Liberia has reiterated its full support for nuclear disarmament, peaceful application of atomic energy, and multilateralism as a viable approach.
Presenting Liberiaโs position on September 29, 2026, during the high-level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of nuclear weapons, at the United Nations in New York, Liberiaโs Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Lewis G. Brown, II, urged non-parties to accede to the NPT and reminded nuclear powers to fulfill commitments under Article VI.
He said a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought, describing the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of nuclear weapons (NPT) as an essential cornerstone of world stability.
According to the Liberian diplomat, security built on mutual annihilation is not peace; it is merely an armistice with catastrophe, and a single explosion would harm civilians and lead to severe damage no humanitarian institution could heal.
Liberia reaffirmed its support for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verification and the expansion of the peaceful use of nuclear technology for development, agriculture, and health.
Liberia stands for diplomacy over brinkmanship, humanity over hegemony, and shared future over guaranteed destruction.
Over 12,100 nuclear warheads remain in global stockpiles, with more than 80 percent held by just two powers.
