For Affordable, Accessible Transport Service To Southeastern Liberia
Monrovia- The National Transit Authority (NTA) has celebrated one year of uninterrupted passenger transport service to Liberia’s southeastern counties, a milestone the citizens say has transformed travel in the region by making transportation more affordable, accessible, and reliable.
The anniversary program, held at the NTA headquarters in Monrovia recently, brought together passengers, Managing Director Hon. Edmund Forh Forh, and his Deputies, and members of the Authority’s senior management team.
Launched on July 25, 2025, the southeastern route has provided dependable transportation to Grand Gedeh, River Gee, Maryland, and neighboring counties. Before the service was introduced, many travelers faced enormous challenges, particularly during the rainy season, with some forced to transit through neighboring Côte d’Ivoire due to poor road conditions.
Over the past year, the NTA has completed 169 successful trips, transporting 12,461 passengers, excluding children under the age of five. Additionally, 983 children benefited from the Authority’s Free Rider Policy, traveling at no cost.
Passenger statistics show that Maryland County recorded the highest number of travelers with 8,107 passengers, followed by River Gee County with 3,221 passengers, while Grand Gedeh County accounted for 1,133 passengers.
Speaking at the celebration, Managing Director Hon. Edmund Forh Forh expressed appreciation to passengers for their continued confidence in the NTA, describing them as valued partners in the Authority’s progress.
“Today marks one year since we opened the route to the Southeast,” ND Forh said. “We thank all of our passengers for believing in the NTA. Your support has encouraged us to continue improving public transportation across Liberia”.
He urged commuters to report any complaints or inappropriate conduct by staff through the NTA’s hotline, stressing that public feedback remains critical to improving service delivery and ensuring accountability.
Looking ahead, Managing Director Forh announced that the Authority plans to extend bus services to Sinoe, Grand Kru, and River Cess counties once road conditions become suitable for regular operations.
He also disclosed that the NTA is preparing to introduce cargo truck services to transport goods and construction materials across Liberia at affordable rates.
“If you are a business person in Grand Gedeh, River Gee and Maryland, simply call the NTA and we will transport your goods at a minimum cost. This initiative will help reduce the cost of doing business and ultimately lower the prices of goods for our people”, the NTA Managing Director said.
Passengers attending the celebration praised President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and the NTA for easing the financial burden of travel to the Southeast.
“A big thank you to the NTA and to President Joseph Boakai,” one passenger said. “Before this service, we were paying between L$30,000 and L$40,000 to travel home. Today, we pay only L$5,500 to reach Maryland County. We give God the glory for this government.”
Another traveler added, “All thanks and appreciation go to President Joseph Boakai and the NTA. I am humbled to appreciate the government for this important achievement”.
The one-year anniversary marks a significant milestone in the National Transit Authority’s strategic plan to expand reliable public transportation nationwide, reinforcing the Government of Liberia’s commitment to improving connectivity while providing safe, affordable, and accessible transportation services for citizens across the country.
